چکیده

It has been claimed that speakers distinguish between phonemically-identical initial syllables that differ in morphological structure, but the phonetic details are poorly understood. Five SSBE speakers read scripted dialogues containing words with such syllables, half with true prefixes (Pr) e.g. mistimes, displease, and half with pseudo-prefixes (PsPr) e.g. mistakes, displays. Each word occurred both with nuclear (N) stress and in postnuclear (PN) position. Pr words were longer up to voicing onset in the second syllable and had longer [ ] and VOT, and shorter [s] than PsPr words. For mis-, the average amplitude of the burst + aspiration was higher in Pr than PsPr. Implications for models of morphological decomposition are discussed.

Aspiration and the gradient structure of English prefixed words

Building on work examining the phonetic properties of prefixed and pseudoprefixed English words (mistimes vs. mistakes), we investigate aspiration in 110 English words beginning with misand dis-, produced by 16 native speakers of American English. We find that some items show considerable cross-speaker variation, but most are stable. Aspiration can occur even before an unstressed syllable (dis-...

Cross-modal morphological priming in French.

We investigated the lexical representation of morphologically complex words in French using a cross-modal priming experiment. We asked if the lexical representation for derivationally suffixed and prefixed words is morphologically structured and how this relates to the phonological transparency of the surface relationship between stem and affix. Overall we observed a clear effect of the morphol...

Mental lexicon and derivational rules.

Lexical decision task in an event-related potential experiment was used in order to determine the organization of mental lexicon regarding the polimorphemic words: are they stored as unanalyzable items or as separate morphemes? The results indicate the later: while monomorphemic words elicit N400 component, usually related to lexical-semantic processing, prefixed words and prefixed pseudo-words...

The Representation of Prefixed Forms in the Italian Lexicon : Evidence from the

In Northern Italian, the phones [s] and [z] are in complementary distribution and only [z] can occur in intervocalic position (for example, ca[z]a ‘house’). Although intervocalic /S/ voicing is a productive process, it does not apply to stem-initial /S/, which is realized as [s] (for example, a+[s] immetrico ‘asymmetrical’). This morphological blockage of intervocalic /S/ voicing is also synchr...
